sam workThe Write Stuff
Asham Literary Endowment Trust sam has been working closely with the Asham Literary Endowment Trust over the last two years to develop a project which aims to inspire and develop new young writers across East Sussex. The Write Stuff takes the Asham Trust in a new direction as it will expand their programme of work to schools and libraries across the county, including Brighton and Hove. The Asham Trust commissioned sam to project manage this large and exciting literature education project early in 2006. Carole Buchan, the Administrator of the Asham Trust commented, "The Write Stuff is one of Asham's most exciting projects, as we feel it will make a real difference to many young people. sam did some excellent research for us two years ago, in preparation for The Write Stuff, so we had no hesitation of inviting them to manage the scheme. I know they will bring expertise and real commitment to the job.” In 2004, as part of its three-year development programme, the Trust commissioned sam, a cultural business development agency, to undertake research into young people's reading and writing in the 21st century. The study drew from current national and regional research and concluded there was a need for a creative literature based project for young people aged 11-16. The Write Stuff project is the result of this consultation and aims to address the needs and aspirations of young writers aged 11 to 16 in East Sussex. “Asham are delighted to have been granted money by both The Foyle
Foundation and The Paul Hamlyn Foundation to undertake the project which
was launched in September 2006. A team of high profile teenage fiction
writers will work with nearly a thousand young people in nine secondary
schools and four libraries spread across East Sussex by running creative
writing workshops throughout October. Once inspired by their initial contact
with real life writers, the young people will then have the opportunity
to be mentored by their visiting writer in an on-line residency from October
to Christmas. The best pieces of writing created by the young people will
be selected for publication in an anthology due to be published early
2007.”
