Brighton Festival Economic Impact Study

Brighton Festival is the largest multi arts festival in England.

In 2004 sam was commissioned by Brighton & Hove City Council, Arts Council England, South East and Brighton Festival Society to undertake the first ever extensive evaluation of the Festival's economic and cultural impact. This study established the benchmark against which the growth of all future Festivals could be monitored, as the organisation planned for the future.

Making an Impact
What was unique about sam's approach was its determination to create a brand new research model firmly rooted in robust and reliable primary data based on the ticketed and free events of Brighton Festival and Brighton Festival Fringe.

As a result, for the first time in its history, Brighton Festival now has firm, credible evidence about the value it brings to the City and the wider community, not only in terms of demonstrable economic gains, but in the benefits to the culture sector as a whole, to its audiences and to the profile of the City itself.

A Sound Investment
So successful has this evaluation been that Brighton Festival, funded by Arts and Business has commissioned sam to create a case study about SME (small and medium enterprises) sponsorship of the Festival.

The Brighton Festival study is one of a number of similar consultancies undertaken by sam, the latest of which is a district by district evaluation of arts and heritage activity on behalf of West Sussex County Council.
